Wild about Watermelon
It’s time to go crazy for watermelon: 92% water, 100% delicious. But how do you pick the perfect one? Look for a creamy yellow spot on the rind with lots of veining. (A common misconception is that stripes indicate ripeness; having stripes is just a characteristic of some watermelons.) Then, give it a good thump with the palm of your hand. If it’s ripe, you’ll hear a deep, hollow thwack sound. Lift it to see how much it weighs. It should be heavy – if one seems lighter than others, it may have lost its water and spoiled. A whole, uncut watermelon should stay at room temperature until ready to be used.
